Angular Penetration Testing

Angular Penetration Testing for Enterprise Applications

Angular usually sits in front of a Java or .NET back end inside a business that has to satisfy an auditor. We test the front end where it can leak, and the API behind it where the access control actually lives. CREST-certified testers, fixed price from £2,450, scoped in 24 hours.

WHY IT MATTERS
Dec 2021

Angular escapes output by default, which removes a whole class of cross-site scripting on day one. The interesting findings are where a developer needed to render HTML and reached for the sanitiser bypass, or where a component compiles a template from data, or where an old AngularJS screen is still served from the same origin.

Angular protects you by default, until someone turns it off

The second area is the one that costs money: route guards. A guard decides what the interface offers. It does not decide what the API returns. We take the list of guarded routes and the endpoints behind them, then call those endpoints with a low-privileged token to see what comes back.

The third is the enterprise pattern around Angular. Interceptors attaching tokens to hosts that are not yours, environment files baked into the build, lazy loaded modules that reveal the shape of the administrative area, and server side rendering that can be persuaded to fetch things.

ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS and Cyber Essentials Plus audits accept manual penetration test evidence. Scan-only evidence is generally insufficient.

ANGULAR SPECIFICS

What We Actually Test in an Angular Application

Ten test areas that apply because the front end is Angular, on top of the standard application checks. Every finding is verified, reproducible and mapped to OWASP, CWE and CVSS 3.1.

NG-01

Route guards versus the API

Every guarded route mapped to its endpoints, then called directly with each role we are given.

NG-02

Sanitiser bypasses

Uses of the security bypass helpers and direct HTML binding, and what reaches them.

NG-03

Dynamic templates and components

Templates or components compiled from data at runtime, which reintroduces expression evaluation.

NG-04

Legacy AngularJS 1.x

Unpatched 1.x screens on the same origin, HTML binding directives, and known sandbox escapes in older versions.

NG-05

Interceptors and token handling

Which hosts receive the bearer token, refresh flows, storage choice, and behaviour on logout.

NG-06

Build artefacts

Source maps in production, environment files with secrets, and lazy loaded chunks that disclose administrative functionality.

NG-07

Server side rendering

Fetch behaviour during render, request forgery through it, and state transfer that carries one user data into another render.

NG-08

API contract and object access

Mass assignment, identifiers that are not bound to the caller, and endpoints referenced in the bundle but missing from the documentation.

NG-09

Content security policy and third-party scripts

Whether a usable policy exists, and which analytics or tag manager scripts become an injection route.

NG-10

Uploads, downloads and preview

Blob handling, content disposition, and SVG or HTML rendered from user content.

METHODOLOGY

SAMPLE FINDING

What a Angular finding looks like

Written the way a finding appears in our reports. The example below is reconstructed from publicly documented research, with hosts, paths and identifiers redacted. We do not republish client findings, named or anonymised.

HighCVSS 7.4 · CWE-1336 · Illustrative example

Client side template injection in an AngularJS view leads to script execution

Affected
The search results view at [redacted], AngularJS 1.6 served from a bundled vendor file.
What we found
The search term was interpolated into the template string rather than bound to it, so an expression in the search term was evaluated by the AngularJS parser. The version in use had already removed the expression sandbox, so no bypass was needed.
Why it matters
Arbitrary script execution in the session of anyone who followed a crafted link, including the finance role that approves payment runs, with the link appearing to point at your own domain.
Fix
Bind untrusted values with ng-bind instead of interpolating them into templates, add a strict content security policy, and plan the migration off AngularJS, which left long term support at the end of 2021 and receives no security fixes.

Reconstructed from public research: the AngularJS security guide, which records that the expression sandbox was removed in version 1.6 because it was never a security boundary, and the AngularJS long term support end date of 31 December 2021.

Angular Penetration Testing: From Scope to Attestation

CREST-aligned methodology built on OWASP Web Security Testing Guide, OWASP ASVS, NIST SP 800-115, and PTES. Each finding maps to all four standards plus your specific compliance regime.

01

Reconnaissance

Application mapping, technology fingerprinting, content discovery, parameter enumeration, authentication-flow analysis, role-matrix construction.

02

Vulnerability Assessment

Authenticated and unauthenticated automated scanning across every user role, plus targeted manual checks for known weakness patterns.

03

Manual Exploitation

Hands-on testing by a CREST-certified pentester. Business-logic exploitation, chained vulnerabilities, privilege escalation, impact validation.

04

Reporting + Retest

Executive summary, technical report with CVSS scores and reproduction steps, walkthrough call, free retest after remediation, attestation letter.

FAQ

Frequently Asked

We are still on AngularJS 1.x. Will you test it?

Yes, and we will be direct about what cannot be fixed without migration. Support ended some years ago, so mitigations tend to be compensating controls rather than patches.

Do you test the Java or .NET API behind the app?

Yes, when it is in scope, using the checks from those technology pages. It is where most findings come from.

Does the built-in escaping mean we can skip a test?

It removes the easy cases. It does nothing about authorisation, which is the class that leads to real data loss.

Can you test behind single sign-on?

Yes. We ask for test accounts at each role level and for a break-glass path if the identity provider blocks automated logins.

Do you need the repository?

No. Source maps make triage faster, and if they are published we will flag it.

What about micro front ends?

Testable, and worth scoping carefully. The interesting questions are which application owns the session and what one micro front end can do to another.

What is included in the price?

Scoping, testing, the executive summary, the technical report, a walkthrough call and free retests until the finding is closed. One scope, one number, no follow-up invoices.

How fast can you start?

Scope to active testing in 24 hours once the scope is agreed, subject to tester availability in your window.

Are your testers CREST certified?

Yes. EJN Labs is a CREST member company and testing is delivered by CREST-qualified testers. The membership is verifiable on the CREST marketplace.
