Microsoft Intune Security Review
Intune can push a PowerShell script to every managed device as SYSTEM. That makes the role that manages it as powerful as any domain administrator, and it is rarely treated that way. CREST-certified testers, fixed price from £2,710, scoped in 24 hours.
- Unlimited retesting
- No rescheduling or cancellation fees
- Fixed quote within 24 hours
“I would highly recommend EJN Labs to any organisation seeking reliable, detailed, and well-managed penetration testing services, particularly for government or enterprise-level projects.”
“There wasn’t another company we could find that could deliver what we needed in the timeframe we needed. The client loved it, and we got instant ROI from the engagement.”
An Intune administrator can deploy a script that runs as SYSTEM on every enrolled device, and can do it without touching a domain controller or triggering the scrutiny that a Domain Admin change would attract. In practice that is estate-wide code execution behind a cloud portal login.
Why device management is privileged access
The second question is coverage. Compliance policies are only meaningful if conditional access actually requires compliance, and configuration profiles are only meaningful if every device is in the assigned group. We look for the devices and platforms that fall outside both.
Enrolment is the third. Where enrolment is open to any user account, an attacker with one credential can join a device they control to your estate and inherit whatever access managed devices are granted.
ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS and Cyber Essentials Plus audits accept manual penetration test evidence. Scan-only evidence is generally insufficient.
POLICIES, ENROLMENT + SCRIPTS
What we actually pen test on an Intune tenant
Manual pen testing across compliance and configuration policy coverage, app protection, enrolment controls, script and remediation privilege and conditional access dependency.
Compliance and configuration coverage
Which devices and platforms fall outside every policy, assignment gaps and exclusion groups, whether non-compliant devices are actually blocked, and grace period configuration.
Scripts, remediations and app deployment
Who can create and assign scripts and remediations, approval and review controls, what the deployment pipeline runs as, and whether an Intune role holder can reach SYSTEM on managed devices.
Enrolment and device join
Who may enrol devices, enrolment restrictions by platform and ownership, autopilot configuration, whether a personal device can join and inherit access, and device attestation.
App protection and data handling
Mobile application management policies for both enrolled and unenrolled devices, copy and paste and save-as restrictions, whether corporate data reaches unmanaged applications, and selective wipe behaviour.
Intune roles and delegation
Role-based access control scope, scope tags, which directory roles carry Intune privilege, and whether a help desk role can reach devices or actions beyond its remit.
Conditional access dependency
Whether device compliance is required by conditional access for the applications that matter, platform coverage gaps, and whether an unmanaged device can reach corporate data.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
How does this relate to your Microsoft 365 review?
They adjoin. The Microsoft 365 review covers the tenant workloads and the Entra ID page covers identity. This one covers device management specifically, including the script deployment path that neither of the others goes into.
Do you need an Intune administrator account?
Read-only visibility of policies, assignments and roles is enough for the review, plus a test device we can enrol. We do not need the ability to deploy anything and would rather not have it.
Will you deploy a script to our devices?
Only to a test device you nominate, and only with written agreement. Demonstrating the privilege usually does not require deploying anything, and we will say clearly where we stopped.
Does this cover Jamf for our Macs?
Jamf has its own page, and if you run both we can scope them together. Mixed estates frequently have stronger policy on one platform than the other, which is itself worth documenting.
What do we receive?
A report mapped to Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 where relevant, a prioritised remediation plan, and unlimited free retesting.
