Umbraco Penetration Testing for .NET Content Estates
Umbraco sites tend to be built once, properly, then extended for years by different hands. We pen test what that leaves behind: an exposed back office, members who can reach more than they should, and packages nobody has updated since launch. CREST-certified testers, fixed price from £2,680, scoped in 24 hours.
- Unlimited retesting
- No rescheduling or cancellation fees
- Fixed quote within 24 hours
“I would highly recommend EJN Labs to any organisation seeking reliable, detailed, and well-managed penetration testing services, particularly for government or enterprise-level projects.”
“There wasn’t another company we could find that could deliver what we needed in the timeframe we needed. The client loved it, and we got instant ROI from the engagement.”
Umbraco is a .NET application before it is a CMS, so it inherits both sets of problems. The content model, member groups and public access rules behave like any CMS permission system, while the surrounding code is ASP.NET with all the model binding, serialisation and configuration questions that brings.
Why Umbraco sits between a CMS test and a .NET test
The finding we raise most often is the simplest. The back office at /umbraco is reachable from the internet with no network restriction and no multi-factor authentication, protected by nothing more than a password that has not changed since the build.
After that it is usually members and public access: document types marked protected in one branch and not another, or a member group that inherits its way into a restricted section. Umbraco is one of several content platforms we publish pages for.
ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS and Cyber Essentials Plus audits accept manual penetration test evidence. Scan-only evidence is generally insufficient.
BACK OFFICE, MEMBERS + PACKAGES
What we actually pen test on an Umbraco site
Manual pen testing across the back office, the member and public access model, installed packages and the .NET surface underneath.
Back office exposure and access
Whether the back office is reachable from the internet, whether multi-factor authentication is enforced for users, login throttling, and what a low-privilege back office user can reach beyond their assigned section.
Members and public access
Member group assignment, protected document types and whether public access rules hold across the whole branch, including whether restricted content leaks through search, sitemaps or the Content Delivery API.
Package and dependency vulnerabilities
Installed packages and NuGet dependencies enumerated and version-matched, with manual verification of anything handling upload, authentication or rendering.
Razor and template handling
Server-side template injection in Razor views, unsafe use of raw HTML output, and rich text fields that can carry script into a page viewed by a back office user.
Media and file handling
Media upload validation, path traversal, whether uploaded files can be executed, and whether media marked as protected is genuinely unreachable by direct URL.
Configuration and .NET surface
appsettings and connection string exposure, verbose error pages, debug settings left enabled, model binding and mass assignment on custom controllers, and any exposed management endpoints.
METHODOLOGY
Umbraco Penetration Testing: From Scope to Attestation
CREST-aligned methodology built on OWASP Web Security Testing Guide, OWASP ASVS, NIST SP 800-115, and PTES. Each finding maps to all four standards plus your specific compliance regime.
Reconnaissance
Application mapping, technology fingerprinting, content discovery, parameter enumeration, authentication-flow analysis, role-matrix construction.
Vulnerability Assessment
Authenticated and unauthenticated automated scanning across every user role, plus targeted manual checks for known weakness patterns.
Manual Exploitation
Hands-on testing by a CREST-certified pentester. Business-logic exploitation, chained vulnerabilities, privilege escalation, impact validation.
Reporting + Retest
Executive summary, technical report with CVSS scores and reproduction steps, walkthrough call, free retest after remediation, attestation letter.
CREDENTIALS
Verified Accreditations Auditors Accept
Every credential below is independently verifiable. UK procurement teams, FCA supervisors, ISO 27001 / SOC 2 auditors, and cyber insurance underwriters all recognise these standards.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
Which Umbraco versions do you test?
All of them, including Umbraco 7 and 8 estates still in production. Where a version is out of support we say so plainly and scope the test around what can actually be fixed.
Should the back office be in scope?
Yes. It is the highest-value target on the site and the most common serious finding. We need one account per user type, and ideally one member account per group as well.
Do you review our custom code?
We pen test it as part of the engagement. If you want line-by-line review of the C# as well, that is our secure code review service and we often run the two together.
Is this suitable for a public sector site?
Yes. Testing is delivered in-house by CREST-certified consultants in the UK, never subcontracted, and the report format is one public sector auditors accept. Umbraco is common across UK councils and agencies and we pen test it regularly.
What happens after the report?
A walkthrough call, then unlimited free retesting until every finding closes. There is no time limit on the retest and no fee for it.
