Modern ransomware operations are methodical about backups. They locate the backup server, use its stored credentials to reach the repositories, delete or encrypt the restore points, and only then encrypt production, because a business with working backups does not pay.
Why the backup is the first target
Veeam is the market leader in the UK mid-market, which makes it a routine target, and it has carried critical vulnerabilities including pre-authentication remote code execution on the backup server. Version currency is therefore the first thing we check.
Then the design questions. Whether the repositories are genuinely immutable, whether the backup server is domain joined and therefore reachable with domain credentials, and whether the service accounts hold administrative rights across every system they protect, which is usually exactly what they hold.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
Will you delete any of our backups?
No. We establish whether deletion is possible through permission and configuration analysis, and we demonstrate it only against a test job you create specifically for the purpose, if you want it demonstrated at all.
Do you need administrative access?
We want to test from an ordinary domain user position first, because that is the realistic attacker view. Read access to the Veeam configuration afterwards makes the account and immutability review far more thorough.
Is this relevant if our backups are in the cloud?
Yes, and the questions shift to object lock configuration, the credentials used to reach the bucket, and whether those credentials can delete as well as write. Cloud backups are not inherently immutable.
What if we use a different backup product?
We review others on the same basis. Veeam has its own page because it is the most common in the UK mid-market, and it is one example rather than a complete list.
How does this fit with our virtualisation review?
Closely. Hypervisor compromise and backup compromise are the same attack from the attacker’s perspective, so scoping the VMware or Hyper-V page alongside this one gives the clearest picture.
