Palo Alto Networks Penetration Testing
Palo Alto gives you App-ID, User-ID and a policy model good enough to express real intent. We pen test whether the policy you wrote is the policy that runs, and whether the management plane is as unreachable as you think. CREST-certified testers, fixed price from £2,460, scoped in 24 hours.
- Unlimited retesting
- No rescheduling or cancellation fees
- Fixed quote within 24 hours
“I would highly recommend EJN Labs to any organisation seeking reliable, detailed, and well-managed penetration testing services, particularly for government or enterprise-level projects.”
“There wasn’t another company we could find that could deliver what we needed in the timeframe we needed. The client loved it, and we got instant ROI from the engagement.”
Palo Alto’s policy model is expressive, which is an advantage and a complication. Rules can match on application, user and content rather than port alone, and estates that migrated from a port-based firewall frequently kept the port-based rules and never moved to App-ID, so the capability is paid for and unused.
Why a good policy model still needs testing
PAN-OS and GlobalProtect have also carried critical vulnerabilities including pre-authentication issues, so version currency and management plane exposure are checked first and checked by testing.
Then segmentation. If the policy claims separation between zones, that claim is verifiable by sending traffic, and auditors increasingly expect verification rather than a configuration export.
ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS and Cyber Essentials Plus audits accept manual penetration test evidence. Scan-only evidence is generally insufficient.
PAN-OS, GLOBALPROTECT + POLICY
What we actually pen test on a Palo Alto firewall
Manual pen testing across PAN-OS version and known vulnerabilities, GlobalProtect exposure, security policy and App-ID usage, management access and Panorama integration.
PAN-OS version and known vulnerabilities
Running version established from behaviour and matched against known exploited vulnerabilities, with manual verification of anything reachable, including management plane and GlobalProtect issues.
GlobalProtect and remote access
Portal and gateway exposure, whether multi-factor is enforced on every path, certificate and authentication profile configuration, and what a connected user reaches internally.
Security policy and App-ID
Rule base review for port-based rules that should use App-ID, any-any permits, shadowed rules, zone segmentation verified by traffic, and whether security profiles are attached to the rules that need them.
Management plane access
Whether the management interface is reachable from user or untrusted networks, administrator authentication and multi-factor, role-based administration scope, and API key handling.
Panorama and shared policy
Where Panorama manages the estate, its exposure and trust, whether device group and template inheritance produces the intended effective policy, and what compromise of Panorama would reach.
Decryption and inspection coverage
Whether TLS decryption is applied where policy assumes inspection, exclusions and their justification, and traffic that passes uninspected.
METHODOLOGY
Palo Alto Penetration Testing: From Scope to Attestation
CREST-aligned methodology built on OWASP Web Security Testing Guide, OWASP ASVS, NIST SP 800-115, and PTES. Each finding maps to all four standards plus your specific compliance regime.
Reconnaissance
Application mapping, technology fingerprinting, content discovery, parameter enumeration, authentication-flow analysis, role-matrix construction.
Vulnerability Assessment
Authenticated and unauthenticated automated scanning across every user role, plus targeted manual checks for known weakness patterns.
Manual Exploitation
Hands-on testing by a CREST-certified pentester. Business-logic exploitation, chained vulnerabilities, privilege escalation, impact validation.
Reporting + Retest
Executive summary, technical report with CVSS scores and reproduction steps, walkthrough call, free retest after remediation, attestation letter.
CREDENTIALS
Verified Accreditations Auditors Accept
Every credential below is independently verifiable. UK procurement teams, FCA supervisors, ISO 27001 / SOC 2 auditors, and cyber insurance underwriters all recognise these standards.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
Will testing disrupt traffic?
No. We do not run denial testing against production perimeter devices. Policy verification uses ordinary traffic, and anything with a risk of disruption is agreed with you first.
Do you need administrative access?
A read-only administrator account makes the policy and App-ID review much stronger. External exposure and version testing needs no access at all, and we usually do that part first.
We use Prisma Access. Is that in scope?
We can include the configuration and policy side. The cloud-delivered infrastructure itself belongs to Palo Alto and we do not attack it, but your policy, your users and your connectivity are yours and are testable.
Do you cover other vendors?
Fortinet and Cisco have their own pages, and SonicWall, WatchGuard and others we pen test on the same basis. These are examples rather than a complete list.
Does this help with PCI DSS?
Directly. Findings are mapped to Requirement 1 and to the segmentation testing expectation, along with ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials.
