WHY IT MATTERS
3

Buyers rarely ask for an application test in the abstract. They say they have a React front end on a Node API, or a .NET estate behind IIS, or a Java service running on AWS, and they want to know whether we have tested that before. The answer matters, because the bugs are not the same. The authorisation flaw that hides in a Spring Security matcher does not look like the one that hides in a Django permission class.

Your stack decides what we look for, not how much it costs

What does not change is the shape of the engagement. Scope agreed in 24 hours, a fixed price rather than a day-rate meter, live findings in the portal as we go, an executive summary and a technical report, a walkthrough call, and free retests until the fix lands.

Below are examples of the technologies we pen test, grouped the way products are actually built. Where a stack changes the penetration test enough to be worth its own page, there is one. This is not a complete list. If what you run is not here we almost certainly still test it, so tell us your stack and we will scope it.

ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS and Cyber Essentials Plus audits accept manual penetration test evidence. Scan-only evidence is generally insufficient.

BY TECHNOLOGY

Example Technologies We Pen Test

Grouped the way products are actually built. Each line links to the page for that stack, or to the service page that covers it. If yours is not listed, it is still in scope.

FRONT END

JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Angular, Vue, Next.js and jQuery

Single page applications and the API behind them, bundle and source map review, client-side authorisation, and the legacy front ends nobody wants to touch.

BACK END

Java and Spring, .NET and C#, Node.js, Python, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Go

Framework-specific authorisation, serialisation, template and injection paths, tested against the framework own failure modes rather than a generic checklist.

APIS

REST, GraphQL, SOAP, gRPC and WebSocket

Object level authorisation, mass assignment, rate limits, token handling, and the endpoints that exist but are not in the documentation.

MOBILE

iOS and Swift, Android and Kotlin, React Native and Flutter

Device storage, certificate pinning, jailbreak and root detection, deep links, and the backend the app talks to.

CLOUD

AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Firebase, Kubernetes, Docker and Terraform

Identity and permission paths, exposed control planes, container escape, secrets handling and network policy.

DATA

PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, MongoDB, Redis, Kafka and Elasticsearch

Injection into every query path, tenant separation, and data stores reachable without authentication.

PLATFORM

Windows builds, macOS builds, Active Directory, Linux, Nginx, Apache, IIS, firewalls, VPN and Citrix

Attack paths from a foothold to domain control, edge device exposure, and configuration review against CIS benchmarks.

PACKAGED

WordPress, Shopify, Magento, Salesforce, SAP, SharePoint, Microsoft 365, single sign-on and Moodle

Permission models, sharing and guest access, plugin and app exposure, and the integrations bolted on around them.

SPECIALIST

Thick clients, Electron, embedded and IoT, AI and LLM applications, blockchain

Binary protections, local storage and interprocess communication, firmware and radio, prompt injection and agent abuse, smart contract logic.

NOT LISTED

Anything else you are running

The list is what comes up most often, not a limit. Name it in the quote form and we will tell you honestly whether we have tested it before.

METHODOLOGY

SAMPLE FINDING

What one of our findings looks like

Written the way a finding appears in our reports. The example below is reconstructed from publicly documented research, with hosts, paths and identifiers redacted. We do not republish client findings, named or anonymised.

HighCVSS 8.1 · CWE-639 · Illustrative example

Authorisation check missing on an internal API route

Affected
A document retrieval route on the customer portal at [redacted], reachable by any account with a valid session.
What we found
A low privileged account could read another organisation documents by changing a single numeric identifier. The route confirmed that the session was valid but never checked that the document belonged to the caller. We enumerated five hundred identifiers in under four minutes.
Why it matters
Any authenticated customer could read every other customer uploaded documents, including signed contracts and identity evidence, which is a reportable personal data breach under UK GDPR.
Fix
Move the ownership check into the data access layer so every query is scoped to the caller, and add a regression test that requests another tenant identifier and expects a refusal.

Reconstructed from public research: the OWASP API Security Top 10, broken object level authorisation, which has been the first entry in that list since 2019.

Stack-Specific Testing: From Scope to Attestation

CREST-aligned methodology built on OWASP Web Security Testing Guide, OWASP ASVS, NIST SP 800-115, and PTES. Each finding maps to all four standards plus your specific compliance regime.

01

Reconnaissance

Application mapping, technology fingerprinting, content discovery, parameter enumeration, authentication-flow analysis, role-matrix construction.

02

Vulnerability Assessment

Authenticated and unauthenticated automated scanning across every user role, plus targeted manual checks for known weakness patterns.

03

Manual Exploitation

Hands-on testing by a CREST-certified pentester. Business-logic exploitation, chained vulnerabilities, privilege escalation, impact validation.

04

Reporting + Retest

Executive summary, technical report with CVSS scores and reproduction steps, walkthrough call, free retest after remediation, attestation letter.

CREDENTIALS

Verified Accreditations Auditors Accept

Every credential below is independently verifiable. UK procurement teams, FCA supervisors, ISO 27001 / SOC 2 auditors, and cyber insurance underwriters all recognise these standards.

FAQ

Frequently Asked

Do you test technologies that are not on this list?

Yes. The list is what comes up most often, not a limit. If you are running something unusual, say so in the quote form and we will tell you honestly whether we have tested it before.

Does the technology change the price?

No. Price follows scope: how many applications, how many roles, how much of the estate is in the test. The stack changes which checks we run.

Do you need our source code?

Not for a standard test. A code review is a separate service and some clients combine the two.

Can you test a stack you have not seen before?

We will tell you if that is the case, and we will not learn on your budget. In practice the pattern of flaws repeats across frameworks, and the specific checks come from the framework own documentation and known issue classes.

How do you handle mixed stacks?

Most engagements are mixed. We scope the whole product once, then apply the stack-specific checks to each part.

What if we are mid-migration?

Common. We test both the old and the new path, because the risk usually sits in what is still reachable from the internet.

What is included in the price?

Scoping, testing, the executive summary, the technical report, a walkthrough call and free retests until the finding is closed. One scope, one number, no follow-up invoices.

How fast can you start?

Scope to active testing in 24 hours once the scope is agreed, subject to tester availability in your window.

Are your testers CREST certified?

Yes. EJN Labs is a CREST member company and testing is delivered by CREST-qualified testers. The membership is verifiable on the CREST marketplace.
