TYPO3 Penetration Testing
TYPO3’s Install Tool needs no backend account, only its own password and a flag file. We test whether that flag file was left active, and whether the password holds up alone. CREST-certified testers, fixed price from £2,060 for a 2-day single-site scope, quoted within 24 hours.
- Unlimited retesting
- Unlimited pre-retesting
- No hidden fees
“I would highly recommend EJN Labs to any organisation seeking reliable, detailed, and well-managed penetration testing services, particularly for government or enterprise-level projects.”
“There wasn’t another company we could find that could deliver what we needed in the timeframe we needed. The client loved it, and we got instant ROI from the engagement.”
The Install Tool sits at /typo3/install, needs no backend account, and is protected only by its own password and a flag file, completely separate from your editors’ and administrators’ logins.
A second login path reaches deep system configuration
TYPO3 keeps frontend users, your site’s visitors, and backend users, your editors and administrators, in two separate systems with two separate logins. We test whether that separation actually holds, and whether a frontend account can reach anything meant only for the backend.
TYPO3’s own documentation confirms the Install Tool does not need a backend account, only its own password and a flag file, and it can change the most basic settings on the system. We test whether that flag file was left in place after setup, and whether the Install Tool password matches the strength of everything else protecting your site.
Backend user groups control what an editor or administrator can see and do, and page permissions control which parts of the page tree they can reach. We test whether a group created for one team can quietly reach pages, records or settings that belong to another.
SCOPE
What we pen test on a TYPO3 site
Install Tool exposure
We test whether the Install Tool’s ENABLE_INSTALL_TOOL flag file has been left in place after setup, and whether the Install Tool password is as strong as everything else protecting the site.
Frontend and backend separation
We test whether a frontend user account can reach any backend functionality, the boundary TYPO3’s own architecture depends on, the same review we run for other tree-structured CMS platforms.
Backend user group permissions
We test whether a backend user group’s permissions let it reach pages, records or modules outside the area it was set up for.
Page tree access rights
We test whether page-level access rights actually restrict which parts of the page tree a user can view or edit.
Extension vulnerability review
We test third-party TYPO3 extensions installed on the site for the same class of issues TYPO3’s own guidelines flag for extension developers.
Upload validation and storage
We test how uploaded files are validated and stored, since insecure uploads are one of the risks TYPO3’s own security guidelines call out directly.
Administrator and Maintainer privilege
We test how many accounts hold administrator or System Maintainer privilege, since TYPO3 restricts entire modules, including the Install Tool’s backend access, to these.
TypoScript and TSconfig review
We test custom TypoScript and TSconfig configuration for settings that widen backend or frontend access beyond what was intended.
HTTPS and encrypted communication
We test whether the backend and the Install Tool are only reachable over HTTPS, in line with TYPO3’s own guidance on encrypted communication.
Workspace content staging
Where Workspaces are used to stage content before publishing, we test whether draft content is reachable by an account that should only see what has gone live.
OUR PROCESS
TYPO3 Penetration Testing: From Scope to Attestation
Site and account intake
You give us a backend test account for each role in scope plus confirmation of whether the Install Tool is enabled.
Permission and group mapping
We map backend user groups, page permissions and the frontend and backend boundary before active testing begins.
Active testing
We attempt to reach pages, modules and settings outside each account’s and group’s intended boundary.
Report and free retest
You get findings mapped to the specific account, group or setting involved, then a free retest once fixes are in.
CREDENTIALS
Verified Accreditations Auditors Accept

FAQ
Frequently Asked
What access do you need to test our TYPO3 site?
A backend test account for each role in scope, such as an editor or a restricted administrator. We do not need the Install Tool password unless the review specifically covers system configuration.
Will testing touch live, published content?
We work against a staging site or draft Workspace content wherever one exists, and confirm with you before any check that could affect live, published pages.
How long does a TYPO3 site review take?
The 2-day single-site scope above covers one TYPO3 instance and its backend user groups. Multiple extensions or a large page tree can need more time, confirmed during scoping.
Do you test our installed extensions?
Yes, third-party and custom extensions in active use are in scope by default, since TYPO3’s own guidelines treat extension code as a security responsibility separate from the core.
What is out of scope?
The TYPO3 core codebase itself is out of scope, since it is maintained and security-tested by the TYPO3 Security Team. We focus on your configuration, extensions, accounts and permissions.
Does TYPO3 have a customer penetration testing policy?
TYPO3 publishes guidance for working with its own Security Team on core vulnerabilities. For your specific hosting and instance, we confirm current testing terms during scoping.
Do you need our source code?
It is not essential, but sharing custom extension code speeds up the review of any bespoke functionality.
Are your testers CREST certified?
Yes. Every TYPO3 review is carried out by CREST-certified, UK-based testers.
