Okta Penetration Testing and Tenant Review
Okta is rarely breached. Okta tenants are misconfigured constantly. We pen test the policies you actually wrote: the sign-on rule with a gap, the help desk admin who can reset anyone, and the API token in a script from 2023. CREST-certified testers, fixed price from £3,290, scoped in 24 hours.
- Unlimited retesting
- No rescheduling or cancellation fees
- Fixed quote within 24 hours
“I would highly recommend EJN Labs to any organisation seeking reliable, detailed, and well-managed penetration testing services, particularly for government or enterprise-level projects.”
“There wasn’t another company we could find that could deliver what we needed in the timeframe we needed. The client loved it, and we got instant ROI from the engagement.”
Okta’s own platform is hardened and heavily scrutinised. The risk in almost every tenant we look at sits in the configuration: a sign-on policy with a rule that matches before the strict one does, a network zone trusting an office IP range nobody has used since 2021, or a group rule granting an application to more people than intended.
Why Okta findings are configuration, not code
The second pattern is administrative. Super admin gets handed out because it is quicker than scoping a role, help desk admins can reset factors for users well outside their remit, and nobody has looked at what an API token can do since the integration that needed it was retired.
So we pen test the tenant the way an attacker holding one valid credential would, then again as a low-privilege admin. Okta is one of several identity platforms we publish pages for, and we pen test others besides.
ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS and Cyber Essentials Plus audits accept manual penetration test evidence. Scan-only evidence is generally insufficient.
POLICIES, ADMINS + TOKENS
What we actually pen test on an Okta tenant
Manual pen testing across sign-on and MFA policy enforcement, administrator role scope, API tokens, provisioning and every application assignment in the tenant.
Sign-on and authentication policies
Every global and application-level sign-on policy evaluated in order, looking for rules that match before a stricter rule can, legacy authentication paths still permitted, and applications excluded from MFA that should not be.
Factor enforcement and recovery
Which factors are actually required rather than merely enrolled, whether phishing-resistant factors are enforced for administrators, and whether self-service recovery can be used to downgrade or reset a factor.
Administrator roles and delegation
Super admin count and justification, custom admin role scope, whether a help desk admin can reset passwords or factors for privileged users, and what delegated administrators reach through resource sets.
API tokens and service accounts
Every active API token enumerated with owner and privilege and tested for what it can do, plus OAuth service apps, their granted scopes, and whether any can escalate to administrative operations.
Provisioning and lifecycle
SCIM and directory integration, whether deprovisioning actually removes access everywhere, group rule logic that over-assigns applications, and orphaned accounts left active after offboarding.
Network zones and device trust
Trusted network zones and the IP ranges behind them, whether zone trust bypasses MFA, device trust and managed device rules, and whether any of it can be spoofed from outside.
METHODOLOGY
Okta Penetration Testing: From Scope to Attestation
CREST-aligned methodology built on OWASP Web Security Testing Guide, OWASP ASVS, NIST SP 800-115, and PTES. Each finding maps to all four standards plus your specific compliance regime.
Reconnaissance
Application mapping, technology fingerprinting, content discovery, parameter enumeration, authentication-flow analysis, role-matrix construction.
Vulnerability Assessment
Authenticated and unauthenticated automated scanning across every user role, plus targeted manual checks for known weakness patterns.
Manual Exploitation
Hands-on testing by a CREST-certified pentester. Business-logic exploitation, chained vulnerabilities, privilege escalation, impact validation.
Reporting + Retest
Executive summary, technical report with CVSS scores and reproduction steps, walkthrough call, free retest after remediation, attestation letter.
CREDENTIALS
Verified Accreditations Auditors Accept
Every credential below is independently verifiable. UK procurement teams, FCA supervisors, ISO 27001 / SOC 2 auditors, and cyber insurance underwriters all recognise these standards.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
Is this a penetration test or a configuration review?
Both, and the split matters. We review the tenant against Okta’s own hardening guidance, then pen test what that configuration actually permits using real accounts. A review alone tells you what the settings say. Testing tells you what they do.
What access do you need?
A read-only administrator account for the review, plus at least two standard user accounts in different groups so we can test the boundaries between them. More roles means more coverage.
Will you lock out our users?
No. We agree rate limits and testing windows in advance, avoid credential stuffing against real accounts entirely, and use accounts you provision for us rather than anyone’s live login.
Do you test the applications behind Okta too?
Only if you scope them in. The SSO integration itself is in scope here, meaning SAML assertion handling and OIDC token validation at the application end. The applications’ own internals are separate engagements.
Does this help with SOC 2 or ISO 27001?
Directly. Identity is where both frameworks concentrate, and the report maps findings to the relevant controls with evidence your auditor can use.
