Tauri App Penetration Testing
Tauri narrows the attack surface Electron leaves open, then hands it back through the command allowlist. Every Rust command you expose is callable from the webview, so a cross-site scripting bug becomes native code execution. CREST-certified testers, fixed price from £2,870, scoped in 24 hours.
- Unlimited retesting
- No rescheduling or cancellation fees
- Fixed quote within 24 hours
“I would highly recommend EJN Labs to any organisation seeking reliable, detailed, and well-managed penetration testing services, particularly for government or enterprise-level projects.”
“There wasn’t another company we could find that could deliver what we needed in the timeframe we needed. The client loved it, and we got instant ROI from the engagement.”
Tauri’s architecture is a genuine improvement on the alternatives. The front end runs in the system webview with no Node runtime, and the privileged work happens in Rust behind an explicit boundary. That boundary is the security model.
Why the IPC boundary is the whole design
It holds only as far as the commands you expose are narrow. A command that takes a path and reads a file, or takes a string and runs a process, is reachable from any JavaScript running in the webview. So a content injection flaw that would be an ordinary cross-site scripting issue in a browser becomes native execution on the user’s machine.
Capabilities and the permission system in recent versions make this controllable, which means it is also worth auditing. We enumerate what is actually granted to each window rather than what the defaults suggest.
ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS and Cyber Essentials Plus audits accept manual penetration test evidence. Scan-only evidence is generally insufficient.
COMMANDS, IPC + UPDATER
What we actually pen test on a Tauri application
Manual pen testing across the command allowlist and capability scope, the IPC boundary, webview content handling, updater signing and filesystem access.
Command allowlist and capabilities
Every exposed command reviewed for what it permits, argument validation in Rust, capability and permission scope per window, and whether a command chain reaches filesystem, process or network operations.
IPC boundary and invocation
Whether the front end can invoke commands it should not, event and channel handling, whether remote or injected content can reach the IPC bridge, and isolation pattern usage.
Webview content and injection
Content security policy configuration, whether any remote content is loaded into a privileged window, injection paths in rendered content, and external link and navigation handling.
Updater and code signing
Update endpoint and signature verification, whether an unsigned or downgraded update is accepted, transport security on the update channel, and platform code signing.
Filesystem and protocol scope
Filesystem allowlist scope and path traversal within it, custom protocol handlers, asset protocol configuration, and whether the app can be made to read or write outside its intended directories.
Local storage and secrets
What the application stores on disk, whether credentials or tokens are written in plaintext, use of the platform keychain, and what an attacker with local access recovers.
METHODOLOGY
Tauri App Penetration Testing: From Scope to Attestation
CREST-aligned methodology built on OWASP Web Security Testing Guide, OWASP ASVS, NIST SP 800-115, and PTES. Each finding maps to all four standards plus your specific compliance regime.
Reconnaissance
Application mapping, technology fingerprinting, content discovery, parameter enumeration, authentication-flow analysis, role-matrix construction.
Vulnerability Assessment
Authenticated and unauthenticated automated scanning across every user role, plus targeted manual checks for known weakness patterns.
Manual Exploitation
Hands-on testing by a CREST-certified pentester. Business-logic exploitation, chained vulnerabilities, privilege escalation, impact validation.
Reporting + Retest
Executive summary, technical report with CVSS scores and reproduction steps, walkthrough call, free retest after remediation, attestation letter.
CREDENTIALS
Verified Accreditations Auditors Accept
Every credential below is independently verifiable. UK procurement teams, FCA supervisors, ISO 27001 / SOC 2 auditors, and cyber insurance underwriters all recognise these standards.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
Why not just use your Electron page?
They share a shape and differ in the detail. Electron risk concentrates on nodeIntegration, context isolation and preload scripts. Tauri risk concentrates on the command allowlist, capabilities and the Rust side. Testing one as if it were the other misses things.
Do you need the source?
It makes a substantial difference here. The command surface is defined in Rust and the capability files are declarative, so reading them turns the test from guesswork into systematic coverage. We work under NDA.
Is the Rust code reviewed?
We pen test it as part of the engagement and pay particular attention to command handlers, since those are the trust boundary. Full line-by-line review is our secure code review service and pairs well with this.
What about Tauri v1 applications?
Still tested. The v1 allowlist model differs from the v2 capability model and tends to be broader, so v1 applications frequently expose more than their authors remember.
What do we receive?
A report mapped to ISO 27001 and SOC 2 where relevant, a developer write-up with reproduction steps, a walkthrough call and unlimited free retesting.
