“I would highly recommend EJN Labs to any organisation seeking reliable, detailed, and well-managed penetration testing services, particularly for government or enterprise-level projects.”
“There wasn’t another company we could find that could deliver what we needed in the timeframe we needed. The client loved it, and we got instant ROI from the engagement.”
Shopware runs a customer-facing Store API and a separately credentialed Admin API side by side, and each one carries its own keys, tokens and blast radius.
Why a Shopware engagement covers two separate APIs, not one
Shopware runs two separate HTTP APIs rather than one. The Store API is the customer-facing surface for product browsing, cart handling, checkout and account management, and it supports both anonymous shoppers and authenticated customers from the same endpoints. Every request against it carries a sw-access-key tied to one sales channel, copied from that channel’s API access settings, and generating a new key invalidates the old one immediately. The Admin API sits behind a separate OAuth layer entirely: an Integration created under Settings, System, Integrations issues an access key ID and secret access key that map to an OAuth client_id and client_secret, used with the client_credentials grant to obtain a bearer token for backend, order and customer management calls. We test both surfaces as what they are: two independently credentialed systems where a breach on one side should not automatically open the other.
Extending a Shopware store today can mean building an app rather than a classic plugin, and an app only gets as much reach as its manifest.xml declares. Permissions combine a privilege, read, create, update or delete, with an entity, or use the crud shortcut to request all four at once, and Shopware describes this whole mechanism as creating a fine-grained Access Control List entry for that app. Installing an app triggers a signed registration handshake: a request carrying the shop’s ID, URL and a timestamp, signed with an app-secret in the shopware-app-signature header, and any later re-registration or secret rotation must be validated against both the new and the previous shop-secret. We test whether an app’s own code enforces the scope it declared, and whether its endpoint actually checks both signatures during a rotation rather than trusting whichever one arrives first.
Flow Builder lets a shop owner chain a business event to one or more automated actions without writing code, which means a change to a single flow can alter order status, customer data or outbound webhooks across the whole store without a deployment. Checkout itself runs through the same Store API used for browsing, so address selection, promotions and order placement for both guest and logged-in customers sit on one continuous surface. Where a store is self-hosted, that surface extends to the server and database underneath it; where it runs on Shopware’s cloud offering, that infrastructure layer is out of your reach and testing concentrates on apps, integrations, automations and the code you have added around them. We agree which of these applies during scoping rather than assuming one.
SCOPE
What we pen test on a Shopware store
Store API Authentication and Sales Channel Access Keys
Every Store API request carries a sw-access-key tied to one sales channel, created and rotated from that channel’s API access settings, and used by headless storefronts, mobile apps and any integration reading products, carts or checkout data. We test which channels a captured key actually reaches and what it lets a caller do.
Customer Sessions, Login and Account Data by ID
The Store API serves anonymous shoppers and logged-in customers from the same endpoints, switching context the moment a customer authenticates. We test whether a session issued to one customer can be used, or an ID changed, to reach another customer’s addresses, order history or saved payment methods.
Admin API Integrations and OAuth Client Credentials
Backend access runs through Integrations created under Settings, System, Integrations, each issuing an access key ID and secret access key that map to an OAuth client_id and client_secret for the client_credentials grant against /api/oauth/token. We test how many integrations exist, what each token can reach, and whether a retired integration was actually revoked.
Admin User Roles and Access Control Lists
Shopware’s Access Control List system is built from read, create, update and delete privileges assigned per entity rather than one blanket admin flag, and both human admin users and integrations operate under it. We test what each role and each integration can actually reach against what its job requires.
Apps, Manifest Permissions and Registration Signatures
An app declares exactly which entities it can read, create, update or delete in its manifest, individually or with the crud shortcut, and Shopware signs registration and re-registration requests with an app-secret and shop-secret pair carried in the shopware-app-signature and shopware-shop-signature headers. We test whether the app’s code enforces the scope it declared and validates both signatures during secret rotation.
Plugins and Self-Hosted Extension Code
A self-hosted Shopware 6 install can run classic PHP plugins alongside apps, sitting closer to the shop’s own code and database than an app’s API-only integration ever does. We review that plugin code the same way as any other custom PHP in your stack, alongside the apps and integrations it sits next to.
Checkout Workflows and Price Calculation
Cart handling and checkout run through the Store API’s own endpoints, covering address selection, promotions and order placement for anonymous and logged-in customers alike. We test whether any step trusts a price, discount or shipping value the client sent rather than one the server recalculated at that stage of checkout.
Flow Builder Triggers and Automated Actions
Flow Builder lets a shop owner chain a business event to one or more actions without writing any code, automating tasks that used to need a developer. We test who can create or edit a flow, what data reaches each action’s destination, and whether a triggered action can change order or customer state outside its intended path.
Self-Hosted Infrastructure versus Shopware Cloud
A self-hosted Shopware 6 instance puts the server, database and file storage in your infrastructure alongside the shop itself, while Shopware’s cloud offering keeps that layer out of your reach entirely. We scope server and configuration checks in on a self-hosted install and concentrate on apps, both APIs and your custom code wherever Shopware manages the hosting.
Storefront Content, Themes and CMS Pages
The Storefront renders shop pages, categories and CMS-managed layouts from the same sales channel that serves the Store API, so a theme customisation or a content block sits on the same attack surface as the checkout around it. We test custom theme code and CMS content for the same issues as any other part of your storefront.
OUR PROCESS
Shopware Penetration Testing: From Scope to Attestation
Scope and Credential Mapping
We agree the sales channels, integrations, apps and environments in scope, then map every sw-access-key, Admin API integration and installed app before testing begins.
Automated and Authenticated Scanning
Authenticated scanning covers the Storefront, the Administration and each integration’s actual OAuth scope, alongside targeted checks for known Shopware configuration weaknesses.
Manual Exploitation
A CREST-certified tester manually tests API credential boundaries, ACL roles, checkout logic and app permissions, chaining findings where they compound across the store.
Reporting and Retest
You get a technical report with CVSS scores and reproduction steps, a walkthrough call, a free retest once fixes are deployed, and an attestation letter for auditors.
CREDENTIALS
Verified Accreditations Auditors Accept
Every credential below is independently verifiable. UK procurement teams, FCA supervisors, ISO 27001 / SOC 2 auditors, and cyber insurance underwriters all recognise these standards.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
What access do you need to test our Shopware store?
An admin login with a role you control, so we see the Administration the way your team manages it, plus at least one customer account on the storefront. Where an app, integration or headless front end is in scope, its own Admin API integration or sw-access-key comes too, scoped to what that integration is meant to do rather than a full-access account created just for us.
Does this touch our live data?
No. We test against a staging shop or a cloned copy of your catalogue and customer data wherever one exists. Where only production is available, any check that could place a real order or move real payment data is agreed and scoped in advance, and read-only checks are logged as they happen.
How long does a Shopware penetration test take?
A single-platform Shopware engagement is scoped at 2 testing days as a starting point, rising with the number of installed apps, sales channels and integrations in play. Reporting and a walkthrough call follow testing, with a free retest once fixes are in.
Shopware Cloud is a hosted platform. What does that leave in scope?
The underlying server, database and infrastructure is managed by Shopware on its cloud offering, so it is not something your configuration changes and it stays out of scope. Testing concentrates on your Admin and Store API integrations, installed apps, checkout customisation, Flow Builder automations and any theme or CMS content you control.
What is out of scope?
Shopware’s own platform infrastructure and other merchants’ shops. Third-party apps you have installed are tested for what they can reach given the manifest permissions you granted them, not audited as a vulnerability review of the app vendor’s own code, and any wider cloud or network review sits outside a single-platform Shopware engagement unless you scope it alongside this one.
Does Shopware have a policy on testing your own store’s security?
Shopware publishes a security contact and a vulnerability reporting form for issues in its own products, rather than a published set of rules of engagement for a merchant testing their own shop. We confirm the current terms with you during scoping, and for a self-hosted install that infrastructure is yours to test; on Shopware’s cloud offering, our testing targets your apps, integrations and custom code rather than the underlying platform.
Do you test the apps we have installed from the Shopware Store?
We test what each installed app can reach given the manifest permissions it holds, since every permission an app requests is granted as an explicit read, create, update or delete privilege on a named entity. We do not audit that as a vulnerability review of the app vendor’s own code, which stays theirs to secure.
We are a developer building an app, not the merchant. Can you test that instead?
Yes. The engagement scopes the same way, against your app’s manifest permissions, its registration and signature verification, its Admin API credentials and any webhook or Flow Builder integration, using a development or sandbox shop rather than a live merchant’s data.
