TECHNOLOGIES: CHECK POINT

Check Point Penetration Testing

A Check Point gateway is only as tight as its admin roles, rulebase and VPN settings are today. We test all three against what your team intended. CREST-certified testers, fixed price from £2,460 for a 2-day single-device scope, quoted within 24 hours.

WHY IT MATTERS
Drift

A rulebase and a set of admin roles built for the network you had two years ago rarely match the network you run today, and nobody schedules time to go back and check.

Why Check Point findings sit in the policy, not the appliance

SmartConsole manages the security policy, and the Gaia Portal manages the operating system underneath it, and it is easy to lose track of who can reach which one. A firewall is only as good as the policy configured on top of it, and an administrator account with more access than their day-to-day work needs is one of the quickest ways to widen that policy without anyone noticing.

The rulebase grows one exception at a time. A rule added for a project that finished eighteen months ago, a cleanup rule that logs nothing, or an implied rule nobody remembers enabling can each open a path that was never part of the design. We work through the live rulebase rather than the change log, because that is what a gateway actually enforces.

Remote access adds a second door: the Mobile Access portal or Endpoint Security VPN client that lets a user reach the internal network from anywhere. We test how that access is authenticated and check the Jumbo Hotfix level against Check Point’s current advisories, because a gateway on the latest hotfix and a gateway several takes behind look identical from the outside.

SCOPE

What we pen test on a Check Point gateway

CP-01

SmartConsole administrator accounts and permission profiles

We check how administrator accounts are split across permission profiles, and flag any account with full read/write access where a narrower, blade-specific or read-only profile would do the job.

CP-02

Gaia Portal and system-level configuration access

The Gaia WebUI and CLI sit underneath SmartConsole and control the operating system itself. We test who can reach them, how administrators authenticate to them, and whether either interface is reachable from networks that do not need it.

CP-03

Multi-factor authentication on management access

We check whether multi-factor authentication is enforced for administrators signing in to SmartConsole and the Gaia Portal, and whether the same credentials reach both the security policy and the operating system underneath it.

CP-04

Any-any and overly permissive rules

We work through the rulebase for any-any or overly broad rules added for a one-off change and never narrowed. We also check for services opened to whole networks rather than the specific hosts that need them.

CP-05

Shadowed and redundant rules

Rules further down the base that can never match, because an earlier and broader rule already catches the traffic, are reviewed alongside rules that duplicate or contradict each other. Both hide what the policy is actually enforcing.

CP-06

Cleanup rule and implied rules

We confirm an explicit cleanup rule drops and logs traffic that matches nothing above it. We also check which implied rules are enabled in Global Properties, so nothing is permitted by a setting nobody reviewed.

CP-07

Mobile Access portal (SSL VPN)

For organisations publishing applications through the Mobile Access portal, we test its authentication, session handling and the list of resources a signed-in user or group can actually reach.

CP-08

Endpoint Security VPN and remote access MFA

Where Endpoint Security VPN or another IPsec client provides full network access, we check how users authenticate, whether multi-factor is enforced on that path, and what a lost or compromised device could still reach.

CP-09

Exposed management and administrative services

We identify which interfaces on the gateway expose SmartConsole, SSH, the Gaia Portal or other administrative services, and check whether any of them are reachable from outside the networks your team intended.

CP-10

Jumbo Hotfix and patch state

We record the Gaia version and Jumbo Hotfix Accumulator level in place, and check it against Check Point’s current advisories for that release train so an unpatched gateway is flagged rather than assumed current.

OUR PROCESS

Check Point Penetration Testing: From Scope to Attestation

01

Scope the gateway

We confirm the Gaia version, Jumbo Hotfix level, admin role count and whether Mobile Access or Endpoint Security VPN are in scope before testing starts.

02

Review roles and rulebase

We work through SmartConsole permission profiles and the live rulebase for any-any rules, shadowed rules and rules with logging turned off.

03

Test remote access

We test Mobile Access and Endpoint Security VPN authentication, including whether multi-factor is enforced on every path in.

04

Report and retest

You get a fixed-price report mapped to your framework, plus a free retest once fixes are in place.

FAQ

Frequently Asked

What access do you need to test our Check Point deployment?

A read-only SmartConsole account is usually enough for the role and rulebase review, plus a separate low-privilege account if remote access is in scope. We do not need Gaia superuser or expert-mode access, and we agree the exact accounts and permissions with you before testing starts.

Will this touch our live traffic or take the gateway down?

We review the configuration, roles and rulebase directly rather than flooding the gateway with traffic. We agree a testing window with you so any higher-risk checks, such as repeated authentication attempts against the VPN, happen at a time you control.

How long does a Check Point test take?

A single gateway with Mobile Access or Endpoint Security VPN in scope is a 2-day engagement. Multiple gateways, a Multi-Domain Security Management setup or additional software blades extend the scope, and we quote for that once we know what is in play.

Do you test the management server as well as the gateway?

Yes, where it is in scope. Management server access, SmartConsole permission profiles and the policy it pushes are reviewed together, since a gap in one can explain a gap in the other.

Do you test on-premises appliances and cloud-hosted deployments the same way?

The rulebase, roles and remote access checks are largely the same whether your Check Point gateway runs as a physical appliance, a virtual machine or a cloud-hosted deployment. We agree the exact access method, whether that is a VPN into your management network or access to a cloud console, during scoping.

What is out of scope?

We test the configuration, roles, rulebase and remote access on your Check Point deployment. We do not test Check Point’s own product code or infrastructure, and any third-party systems the gateway routes to are only in scope if you ask us to extend testing to them.

Does Check Point have a customer penetration-testing policy we need to follow?

Some vendors set notice periods or rules of engagement for testing their platforms. We confirm Check Point’s current terms for the specific product and licensing you run during scoping, so the engagement stays inside whatever conditions apply.

Are your testers CREST certified?

Yes. All testing is carried out by CREST-certified, UK-based testers, and the report is written so it can be handed straight to an auditor or framework assessor.
