Sitefinity Penetration Testing
Sitefinity’s own documentation calls its Authors, Editors and Designers roles a functional boundary, not a security boundary. We test what each role, permission and web services access key can actually reach. CREST-certified testers, fixed price from £3,380 for a 3-day single-site scope, quoted within 24 hours.

“I would highly recommend EJN Labs to any organisation seeking reliable, detailed, and well-managed penetration testing services, particularly for government or enterprise-level projects.”
“There wasn’t another company we could find that could deliver what we needed in the timeframe we needed. The client loved it, and we got instant ROI from the engagement.”
Sitefinity’s documentation says its predefined backend roles are a functional boundary, not a security boundary, and are intended only for highly trusted personnel with limited access to the administrative interface.
Sitefinity says its roles are functional, not a security boundary
Sitefinity ships with predefined backend roles, Authors, Editors, Designers and Administrators, and each grants permissions across the site. Progress’s own documentation warns that these roles separate responsibilities, not trust levels, and calls them a functional boundary rather than a security boundary. We test whether that gap has been closed with individual permissions, or whether a role still carries more access than the person using it needs.
Permissions in Sitefinity are inheritable: an individual page, content item or module starts with the permission set on its parent group, and can be overridden item by item. We test whether an override meant to restrict one page has instead been applied at the group level, opening up everything that inherits from it.
Sitefinity authenticates web service requests with OAuth2 access tokens or with an Access Key generated for machine-to-machine integrations, and the CMS itself can hand authentication off to Google, Facebook, Azure AD or any OpenID Connect provider. We test which credential type your integrations actually use, and what each one can do if it leaks.
SCOPE
What we pen test on a Sitefinity site
Predefined role boundaries
We test what each predefined role, Author, Editor, Designer and Administrator, can actually reach, given that Sitefinity’s own documentation calls these a functional boundary rather than a security one, the same review we run for other enterprise CMS platforms.
Item-level permission overrides
We test whether an item-level permission override widens access instead of narrowing it compared with the group permission it inherits from.
Access Key exposure
We test what a leaked machine-to-machine Access Key can do against the web services API.
OAuth2 token scope
We test the scope granted to an OAuth2 access token issued to a third-party integration, and whether it can reach more than that integration needs.
External identity provider configuration
We test your Azure AD, Google, Facebook or OpenID Connect configuration for a setup that would let a token from the wrong tenant or application authenticate.
Backend menu and module visibility
We test whether the View permission actually hides a backend module and its menu link from a role that should not see it.
Widget and dynamic module permissions
We test the permission sets on custom widgets and dynamic modules, since these are configured separately from standard content permissions.
Headless API exposure
Where Sitefinity serves content to a decoupled frontend through its headless API, we test what an unauthenticated or low-privilege caller can retrieve.
Library and asset permissions
We test library permissions for images, documents and videos, which are configured separately from the permissions on content items.
Integration Hub workflow access
For sites using Sitefinity Cloud’s Integration Hub, we test what an automated workflow can access and whether it is scoped to the systems it actually needs.
OUR PROCESS
Sitefinity Penetration Testing: From Scope to Attestation
Site and role intake
You give us a test account for each role in scope plus a list of Access Keys, OAuth2 clients and external identity providers in use.
Role and permission mapping
We map every role, item-level override and web services credential to what it is meant to reach before active testing begins.
Active testing
We attempt to reach content, modules and integrations outside each role’s and credential’s intended boundary.
Report and free retest
You get findings mapped to the specific role, permission or credential involved, then a free retest once fixes are in.
CREDENTIALS
Verified Accreditations Auditors Accept
Every credential below is independently verifiable. UK procurement teams, FCA supervisors, ISO 27001 / SOC 2 auditors, and cyber insurance underwriters all recognise these standards.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
What access do you need to test our Sitefinity site?
A test account for each backend role in scope, such as Author, Editor or Administrator, plus details of any Access Keys or OAuth2 clients in use. We do not need your primary Administrator login.
Will testing touch live, published content?
We work against a staging site or test content wherever one exists, and confirm with you before any check that could affect live, published content.
How long does a Sitefinity site review take?
The 3-day single-site scope above covers one Sitefinity instance and its roles. Multiple frontends, an Integration Hub setup or heavy custom module use can need more time, confirmed during scoping.
Is Sitefinity self-hosted or cloud, and does that change scope?
Sitefinity can be self-hosted or run on Sitefinity Cloud. We confirm which applies during scoping and test your roles, permissions and integrations either way.
What is out of scope?
The underlying server is only in scope if you host Sitefinity yourself and ask us to include it. On Sitefinity Cloud, the shared platform is out of scope; we focus on your roles, permissions and integrations.
Does Progress have a customer penetration testing policy for Sitefinity?
Vendor and hosting terms vary by deployment, so we confirm the current testing policy for your instance during scoping and work within it.
Do you need our source code?
You do not need to share source code, but custom widget or dynamic module code speeds up the review of their permission sets.
Are your testers CREST certified?
Yes. Every Sitefinity review is carried out by CREST-certified, UK-based testers.
