Gravity Forms Integration Security Review
Gravity Forms checks submitted values against the form’s configuration, but that check switches off for dynamically populated fields. We test which fields are dynamically populated and what a tampered submission can change. CREST-certified testers, fixed price from £2,060 for a 2-day single-integration scope, quoted within 24 hours.

“I would highly recommend EJN Labs to any organisation seeking reliable, detailed, and well-managed penetration testing services, particularly for government or enterprise-level projects.”
“There wasn’t another company we could find that could deliver what we needed in the timeframe we needed. The client loved it, and we got instant ROI from the engagement.”
Gravity Forms validates that a submitted value matches the form’s stored configuration, but that check is bypassed entirely when the field allows dynamic population.
One setting switches off Gravity Forms’ tamper check
Gravity Forms generates a state when a form is displayed, based on its configuration and allowed values, and checks submitted data against that state on submission. Gravity Forms’ own documentation confirms this check is bypassed when dynamic population is enabled for a field, so a price, a hidden value or a restricted choice populated dynamically loses that protection. We test which fields use dynamic population and what a submission can be made to say once it does.
Uploaded files are saved into a subfolder of the Gravity Forms uploads directory named with the same salted HMAC-MD5 algorithm WordPress itself uses, which makes the folder hard to guess, and an empty index.html file in each one blocks directory listing on a misconfigured server. We test whether an upload form still requires the login Gravity Forms recommends, and whether the file itself is validated before it is stored.
The REST API authenticates with API Keys over Basic Authentication or OAuth 1.0a, generated from the REST API settings page and separate from any WordPress user password. We test what an exposed API Key can read or submit, and whether it reaches more forms and entries than your integration needs.
SCOPE
What we pen test on a Gravity Forms integration
Dynamic population bypass
We test which fields use dynamic population, since Gravity Forms’ own documentation confirms state validation is switched off for them, on the same install we cover in a full WordPress penetration test.
State validation tampering
We test whether a submission can be crafted to bypass the state validation check on fields where it should still apply.
Upload folder and extensions
We test the uploads folder path and allowed file extensions for a way to store or retrieve a file type the form was not meant to accept.
Authenticated-only upload enforcement
We test whether a form with a file upload field actually requires login, the control Gravity Forms recommends when uploads cannot be avoided.
REST API key scope
We test what an exposed REST API Key can read or submit, and whether it reaches more forms and entries than the integration needs.
Entry data exposure
We test who can view or export form entries, including any personal data submitted through the form.
Merge tag and file URL exposure
We test whether a merge tag can be used to expose an uploaded file’s URL to someone who should not have it.
Add-on and webhook handoff
Where Gravity Forms pushes submissions to a third-party service through an add-on or webhook, we test whether that handoff is authenticated and validated at the receiving end.
Notification and confirmation exposure
We test whether notification and confirmation emails can be manipulated to send submitted data to an address the form was not configured to use.
Caching interaction with state validation
Since Gravity Forms notes that caching can affect state validation, we test whether a caching layer serves a stale state that lets a tampered submission through.
OUR PROCESS
Gravity Forms Integration Security Review: From Scope to Attestation
Form and integration intake
You give us access to a test form covering each field type and integration in scope, plus any API Keys in use.
Field and integration mapping
We map which fields use dynamic population, which forms handle uploads, and what each integration or API Key can reach.
Active testing
We attempt to submit tampered, oversized or unexpected data past each field, upload and integration boundary.
Report and free retest
You get findings mapped to the specific field, form or integration involved, then a free retest once fixes are in.

FAQ
Frequently Asked
What access do you need to test our Gravity Forms integration?
A copy of the forms in scope, including any using dynamic population or file uploads, plus any REST API Keys in use. We do not need your WordPress administrator login.
Will testing touch live entry data?
We submit test entries of our own wherever possible, and confirm with you before any check that could touch live form entries or the personal data in them.
How long does a Gravity Forms integration review take?
The 2-day single-integration scope above covers one Gravity Forms setup, including its forms, uploads and API use. Multiple complex forms or add-ons can need more time, confirmed during scoping.
Do you test the WordPress site as well as the plugin?
This review focuses on Gravity Forms itself: its forms, fields, uploads and API. A full WordPress review, covering the CMS, other plugins and hosting, is scoped separately.
What is out of scope?
The Gravity Forms core codebase is out of scope, since it is maintained by the vendor. We focus on your form configuration, uploads, entries and integrations.
Does Gravity Forms have a customer penetration testing policy?
Gravity Forms publishes guidance on staying informed about security updates. For your specific site and hosting, we confirm current testing terms during scoping.
Do you need our source code?
It is not essential, but sharing custom add-on or webhook handler code speeds up the review of anything built around the forms.
Are your testers CREST certified?
Yes. Every Gravity Forms review is carried out by CREST-certified, UK-based testers.
